Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will End... For Now.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that Pluribus would become a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the popular series reaching its finale—and a second season officially in the works—the creative team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Tremendous Audience Reaction
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the rampant praise and online debates regarding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“It feels like force fed something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Will Vince Gilligan Know the Finale of Pluribus?
So if Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by public opinion, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… with some caveats.
“We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” he states. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a good idea for a better idea. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
