The people of Israel mark second remembrance of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace negotiations continue
Israelis have assembled across the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-led offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions continued in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.
The assault resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as captives. It was the single most lethal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel answered by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are considered trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our aggressive adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the leader remarked on that day.
He also vowed to "realize all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will never again present a risk to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities postponed official remembrance events until 16 October - after the end of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still took place around the country on Tuesday.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of people who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was aired throughout Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was observed across the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' representatives convened in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of mediated discussions to discuss the terms of the plan.
A prominent Palestinian official knowledgeable about the negotiations indicated that an evening round of mediated discussions began at 7 PM local time.
The official said the earlier meeting ended without concrete outcomes, due to disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not recommence hostilities after the first phase of the arrangement.
He commented that the talks are "difficult and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the both parties.
Essential Matters in Discussions
- A lasting truce
- The swap of the captives still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for assistance distribution
- After-conflict management of the territory
Public Feeling
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member endured the attack on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and dozens more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place appears as home any longer and until every captive return no one will be secure."
"Once we see all home returned, we can relax again. Then we can begin to rebuild," she continued.
Outside the prime minister's home in the capital, people assembled to show their support for the families of the abducted. Israel says nearly fifty continue in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be living.
Protester Atalia Regev stated: "We need do any agreement required for the hostages to be released. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that around 70% of Israeli citizens desire the hostilities to conclude in return for the liberation of the hostages.
Palestinian Situation
At the site of the gathering, grieving people assembled to honor the dead.
From the site, the noise of aerial bombardments and shelling could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people said the heavy Israeli attacks persisted.
In the main city, bombardments were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, Rimal and Nasr districts and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the north-west.
"When the evening falls, the dread arrives with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack last year, explained.
"My family are afraid of the air strikes. During nighttime we are lying together, clinging, notably my smallest child who rests his head on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we check the news to see developments. And I'm worried that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will resume to us."
Medical Emergency
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City reported it had received the corpses of six people by the midday, including three killed in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the southern city of Khan Younis said additional victims had been delivered. An individual was died by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get assistance to the south region, health workers stated.
