The Actress Fiona Shaw Talks About Her Career: From Andor to Harry Potter

During a recent conversation, acclaimed performer Fiona Shaw shared insights about her diverse career spanning multiple decades and memorable characters.

The Impactful Andor Monologue

While talking about her memorable funeral speech in the Star Wars series Andor, Shaw revealed that the initial version included stronger language. "I did say a different word in my speech," she explained, "while the screenwriter hoped that Disney would accept it."

The actress detailed the unusual shooting circumstances for this specific moment. "When I performed that speech, I was filmed by about 200 cameras for making a hologram. I was completely alone in a huge soundstage, with no director nor crew members present in the room."

Classic Literature Projects

Speaking about the forthcoming screen version of Jane Austen's classic novel, Shaw shared enthusiasm about the completed filming. "We've just finished shooting it," she stated, "though performers rarely witness is the final film."

She praised director Georgia Oakley as "really lovely and quite confident." The production took place in beautiful estates throughout Britain, including sites within Dorset, Knebworth, and Devonshire.

Shaw also reflected on her previous role in the nineties version of Persuasion, playing Mrs. Croft. "Our filmmaker had specific requirements: no wigs and only candlelight," she remembered. "He truly aimed to capture the experience of nineteenth-century existence."

Harry Potter Memories

When asked about her time in the wizarding film series, Shaw talked warmly about working with her departed co-star. "He represented the most refined, artistic and talented man," she shared. "He had the most beautiful penmanship and once sent me a note asking to lunch in elaborate gothic lettering."

The actress portrayed Griffiths as continuously talking and sharing fascinating anecdotes with herself and the young actors on set. "He possessed fantastic general knowledge so we would sit enthralled by his tales."

Stage Performances

Talking about her New York stage role in Medea, Shaw recalled how emotionally demanding the production was. "I encountered one of the ensemble actors several years after, who said: 'I'm not over it yet,'" she disclosed.

The production continued for years, beginning in Ireland, then traveling to England, followed by Washington DC, the New York venue, and ultimately Manhattan. "We became very close as a cast," she added.

Performance Philosophy

Regarding inquiries concerning her capacity to move between humor and seriousness, Shaw explained that "comedy connects us as it's about breaking conventions." Nevertheless, she admitted that "the night before a comedy, I always sleep poorly, because you have to catch the wave during performance."

Concerning her method for approaching different characters, Shaw stated: "I discover each one difficult. But even if the character you're portraying is quite distant from you, there is frequently some aspect about them that you identify with."

Current Projects

Discussing her latest role in the production Hot Milk, Shaw described her character Rose as "a terrible woman but you can't play anything from that viewpoint." She explained that Rose suffers from a functional neurological disorder that causes mobility issues.

"She is unaware of the effect she creates on her daughter," Shaw observed. "Her only concern is that she desires to get better. She's both benign and blind. Perhaps that's what most of us are."

Self-Perception

When told that audiences perceive her ideal as authority figure characters, Shaw answered with humor: "Oh dear! I'm really not intimidating. But maybe when infused with intention, my features can appear threatening."

She added: "In reality sometimes quite scatty so perhaps it's therapeutic for me to play very intelligent, methodical personalities. I try to depict fascinating individuals so I avoid criticizing them. Don't be scared – approach and greet me!"

Passion for Words

Talking about her celebrated interpretation of T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land, Shaw expressed her profound relationship with words and verse. "My heart is always in the language," she stated, "since the indicators to everything are there in the selection of vocabulary."

The actress thinks that "verse constitutes the polished form of language, or the instant that's been preserved." When people boil down to what they truly want to say, it's frequently lyrical."

Voice Recording

Regarding her acclaimed audiobook performances, specifically Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Shaw revealed that "I enjoyed recording Alice in Wonderland because I included all my acquaintances into it – personal companions and fellow performers."

The actress explained how she voiced the caterpillar as channeling Alan Rickman, and portrayed the Red Queen as reminiscent of Geraldine McEwan. "It always seems a privilege to sit and speak literature," she concluded, "despite needing days and days of work."

Working with Terrence Malick

Remembering her time working with celebrated filmmaker Terrence Malick on Tree of Life, Shaw described him as distinctive. "All that the director expresses and undertakes is unique," she noted.

She shared a specific recollection of their first meeting: "He left a message on my answering machine which said, 'I wonder, would you assist me with my film?' We went out for breakfast. He said, 'Well, what are you going to have?' I said, 'I'm going to have scrambled eggs.' He said, 'I think I'll have scrambled eggs too,' like it was the most exotic choice in the world."

The actress also described Malick's distinctive method of asking actors "Would you prefer to do this scene indoors or outdoors?" – inquiries seldom made by different directors. "He only employed natural light," she added, "so you could either perform interior near glass or exterior on location."

Regarding the lengthy post-production, Shaw disclosed that "He takes approximately three years to edit the film. I had been told by the producer following twenty-four months that I was likely among the primary roles, but when the film was released, I was mostly removed."

The actress finished by describing Malick's distinctive approach: "He constructs this massive framework, and he removes most elements. He fundamentally dismantles films."
