New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the hospital, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”
Authorities issued video stills Monday of a man sought in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday morning near MSG and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.
He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “In fact, he attends every game. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
