New research suggests that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using such medications should be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced something activating and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
