Democrats Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment
Democratic officials demonstrated fury after former President Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be taken into custody and penalized "through capital punishment" following their release of a contentious video.
The Message That Sparked the Debate
The video footage, released on Tuesday, features six Democratic elected officials who in the past acted in defense or defense capacities.
"Like us, you all took an vow to defend and defend this founding document," the representatives affirmed in the brief video. "At present, the threats to our constitution don't only come from abroad, but from domestically. Our statutes are clear, you can refuse illegal orders, you can refuse improper directives, you should refuse improper directives. No one has to carry out orders that break the legal system or our constitution."
Donald Trump's Incensed Reaction
The recorded statement appeared to prompt a angry response from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another publication, he wrote: "This constitutes really bad, and Risky to our Nation. Their words cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Representatives React
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Top Democrats published a combined statement condemning the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no place in the United States," they stated. "Congress members who appeared in the video all acted our nation with exceptional patriotism and honor. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous calls for execution against congressional representatives, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to guarantee the safety of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay take down these radical social media posts and recant his aggressive discourse before he gets someone killed," the declaration continued.
Lawmakers' Defiant Reaction
The officials who participated in the video also issued a response.
"We serve as former service members and defense specialists who value this nation and swore an oath to defend and defend the founding document of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge continues forever, and we intend to honor it. No warning, coercion, or promotion of aggression will deter us from that fundamental responsibility."
"The most revealing aspect is that the president views it subject to penalty by execution for us to restate the legal requirements," they continued. "Armed forces members should know that we have their support as they carry out their oath to the founding principles and duty to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."
They added: "The entire nation must unite and condemn the president's requests for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a time for ethical certainty."
More Political Reactions
The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's statements and posted on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is calling for the capital punishment of elected officials."
He added: "This is an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, every American – regardless of party – should censure this without delay and unconditionally."
The GOP leader defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "It is very harmful, you have leading members of the legislature advising soldiers to defy commands, I think that's historic in US history."
The Conservative representative also reportedly informed the press that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "defining the offense of treason" but that "attorneys have to examine the terminology and establish all that."
White House Reaction
During a administration briefing on that day, when asked by a media member, "Is the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson responded: "No."
"It's important to note about what the former president is reacting to," the spokesperson stated. "You have current representatives of the federal government who conspired to arrange a recorded statement to members of the American armed forces, to serving soldiers advising them to ignore the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She stated: "The integrity of our armed forces relies on the command structure, and if that structure is compromised, it can result in fatalities, it can cause disorder, and that's what these members of Congress ... are essentially promoting."
