Arrangements for Putin-Trump Talks Postponed Shortly After Budapest Talks Proposed

There are "no preparations" for US President Donald Trump to confer with Russian President Putin "in the immediate future", a administration representative has announced.

This past week Trump said he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Budapest within two weeks to discuss the ongoing hostilities.

A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for recently - but the administration stated the two had had a "positive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was no longer "necessary".

The administration declined to provide further information on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Previous Developments

The US president had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a day before meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Certain accounts suggested his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with sources claiming Trump had pressured him to cede large areas of Ukraine's east as part of a deal with Moscow.

However, on Monday Trump endorsed a ceasefire proposal backed by Ukraine and EU officials to freeze the conflict on the current front line.

"Let it be cut where it stands," he remarked.

Moscow has consistently objected against freezing the existing front lines.

The Russian government was solely focused on "enduring stability", Lavrov said on Tuesday, implying that pausing conflict would simply constitute a short-term truce.

Negotiating Stances

The "root causes" of the conflict needed to be addressed, Lavrov stated, using Russian diplomatic language for a series of maximalist demands that encompass the acceptance of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the demilitarisation of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its European partners.

Zelensky said conversations concerning the battle positions were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Moscow was "taking all measures" to prevent dialogue.

He additionally stated the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with the US leader recently occurred before speculation that the United States was considering delivering extended-range cruise missiles to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target Russian territory.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the Tomahawks issue that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The conversation concerning the weapons systems had emerged as a "valuable contribution" in diplomacy", he commented.
